Should You Book Charter Or Schedule?

Charter

Charter flights are there for a particular purpose to take holiday makers to a resort for their holiday and bring them back again. You'll have to fit in with that schedule, though there is more flexibility on routes where there are frequent flights to the destination.

Such flights are organised by tour operators (such as Monarch and First Choice) to supply transport for package holidays to mainly Mediterranean destinations, the most popular of which are Tenerife, Alicante, Fuerteventura, Paphos, Lanzarote and Faro.

Fares tend to vary depending on supply and demand. To keep costs to a minimum, tour operators will always try to fill their aircraft and will discount to the extent of selling below cost to fill their allocations. Prices can be extremely high at certain times of the year when many people want or need to travel like during school holidays, bank holidays and Christmas time.

The rules for charter flights are very strict. Once booked they cannot be changed or cancelled without a charge of up to 100 per cent of the ticket value. Within the UK, Manchester, Gatwick and to a certain extent Luton airport are the main bases for charter flights. If you want a long stay, you will need a scheduled airline or two one-way tickets.

Keep these few helpful tips in mind when looking for the best package holiday with a charter flight.

  • Leave it to the last minute. A day or two before the flight, the price of spare seats can drop.

  • Do some research. Gate 14 provides a wealth of resources on airlines and flight discounts.

  • Check which airport you are flying into. Charter flights often fly into airports with fewer facilities and that may be out of the way, but because they are smaller you'll avoid the hassles of a large crowded, noisy airport and queues tend to be far shorter.

  • Find out what is included in the price of a air ticket. It is worth checking the amount of luggage you can check in too.

    Schedule Flights

Scheduled airlines are more recognisable. They are the major players such as British Airways, Air France, United Airlines and the low-costs such as easyJet and German Wings. To get a cheap flight with a scheduled airline the advice below will help cut down on costs.

  • Generally speaking you will get a cheaper fare by booking early. There is a 'golden' time which you should aim for when booking your tickets - and it's not last minute! This window in time will give you the lowest air fare rate. Miss it and it could cost you dearly.

  • Shop around for the best deal. One company will never always have the cheapest price all the time. Be patient while you are searching. It'll be worth it.

  • Be flexible with your flight times. Try departing on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday rather than at weekends.

  • Go for early morning or late evening flights, but make sure you will be able to get to the airport and from the airport cheaply and reliably. Last thing you want is to be stranded because there are no taxis or local transport.

Take a look at Gate 14, where you'll find a no-frills airline directory. To learn money saving techniques when travelling Gate 14 also offers publications and reports from various sources that anyone can use, no matter which part of the world you live in.
